It astounds me how much untapped potential there is in the horror genre. A genre which often digs into folklore and mythology, horror has, not all that surprisingly, focused on the various myths and evils revolving around Christianity and mostly white interpretations of society. In the last few years though, we have seen an uptick in horror films exploring other religions and cultures. Focused heavily on Jewish mythology, The Golem from Dread is the latest to join the pack, and it’s a doozy…

I want to believe. Mulder had it right. There must be life out in the universe somewhere, right? Are we as humans really such egomaniacs, that we think we’re the only intelligent species in the whole damn galaxy? Now, that doesn’t mean we’ll ever see a bunch of lanky, gray, bobble-headed aliens land on earth, or that we’ll ever fight a colony of space seeds taking over our bodies, but if there’s ever an impending invasion as seen in Fighting the Sky, I’ll be sleeping through it… I’m not a believer in the whole “horror has suddenly become elevated” thing. The genre has always had deeply personal, intelligent films. But I won’t argue that there has been a bit of a shift away from the cheesy, entertaining for entertainment’s sake, dumb B-horror films that were at their best during the 80s. We see so much less of this type of film these days, but Dead Ant is here to change that in 2019… Filmmakers are ambitious. They have to be to have the commitment to sit on set for twenty-two hours a day, with the weight of millions of dollars on their shoulders and knowing that if this damn movie doesn’t work, it could be their last. Ambition can be a great motivator, but it can also be a killer. In the case of Crossbreed, it’s the latter… In horror, we can buy anything. Immortal masked madmen with a penchant for ruining teen sex parties. Disgraced prom queens committing mass murders with their mind. Alien blobs growing to the size of a building. You name it, we’re cool with it, as long as we care about what’s happening. But sometimes, characters are just so awful, caring becomes a more grueling task than it should be. Say hello to Wretch… Girl meets boy. Boy’s incestual family rapes girl. Girl becomes bound to boy through demon family blood. And horror fans are given yet another unoriginal film in which the rape of a woman is a major plot point, and the control over her by men the main theme. I’m not inherently against such ideas, as long as they’re original or have something interesting to say, but Bloodbound is neither… Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a drug trip so bad, that you couldn’t tell reality from now and five minutes ago? Ever considered what it would be like to have your brain literally melt and ooze out of your ears into a nasty, pink, bubbling puddle on the floor? Well guess what? Now you can have that unpleasant experience in the safety of your own home by checking out Doom Room from Wild Eye Releasing… 1999. Columbine happened. Bill Clinton was acquitted of obstruction of justice (weird). Sponge Bob premiered. And the world was preparing for Y2K and the inevitable takeover of our computer overlords (also weird). So maybe the utterly forgettable horror film Virus, which released twenty years ago today, was representative of that fear, but what if it was actually pro-Russian propaganda?... In horror, very few things are off limits. This is the genre that uncovers humanity’s darkest secrets, and puts them right under a well-lit lens for all to see. Despite that, there are a few things which are considered “taboo”, depending on the audience, including child abuse, and child murder. Dark Sky Films’ The Dark explores both, and that’s just a taste of the sort of darkness swirling around the film… Once, a little over ten years ago, I was so delusional from a fever, that I imagined I was a tree. Not just any tree, but the mother fucking king of trees. I had roots. Branches. And a wide-ass trunk that could never be cut down. In retrospect, I probably should’ve gone to the hospital. But the point is, delusions can be a hell of a mind fuck. In that state of mind, how can you tell what’s real and what’s not? Coming next week from Dread Presents, Dry Blood aims to screw your brains silly… |
