[Review] "Tell Me a Story" is a dull tale

(By Mark Gonzales) Perhaps you have seen the massive advertising campaign for CBS All Access's new horror series Tell Me A Story. The print ads show a frightening image of three scary pig faces staring at each other and the creepy invitation to… "Tell Me A Story." It's a strong campaign and one that worked on me. I wanted to see this latest offering from CBS All Access and was willing to give it the time it needed to win me over. Sadly, this series is probably the most boring thing on the steaming platform… including old episodes of Caroline In The City…

(By Matt Konopka) On Monday, Netflix surprised horror fans with one last Halloween treat, a small collection of short films entitled Don't Watch This. For this anthology, Netflix asked filmmakers to bring them their most vile, unwatchable pieces of macabre entertainment, hence the title...

[Review] If you watch one film this Halloween, it should be the surprisingly profound "President Evil"

(By Matt Konopka) Released in 1978, John Carpenter’s Halloween changed horror in America forever. The film spawned various sequels, remakes, requels, action figures, mugs with Michael Myers face on them, and so on. It also inspired countless copycats, such as Friday the 13th, which led to the slasher film craze. Yet, despite all of that, I have never, in the four decades since the original film released, seen a spoof of Halloween that is as outrageous yet somehow profoundly important as President Evil…

[Review] "Channel Zero: The Dream Door" leads into a terrifying realm of mistrust and murder-happy clowns

10/29/2018

(By Matt Konopka) It was only as recently as 2016 that Channel Zero premiered on Syfy with its first season, Candle Cove. An anthology horror show, the series set out with the idea to adapt one terrifying story per season (generally CreepyPasta adaptations). While the chilling horror series did not “catch on” initially, the fan base for it has steadily grown, and we have now been gifted the fourth season in just two years, Channel Zero: The Dream Door…

[Review] Sabrina is back, witches, in "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"

(By Mark Gonzales) As we draw ever closer to the end of October and the Halloween season, we see many more strange and spooky occurrences. Similarly, as we go deeper into the post-network TV era (just past the Golden Age of HBO and into the Streaming Service Epoch) we find ourselves at a bizarre intersection of 90s nostalgia and gritty re-imaginings. Sitting comfortably at the corner of this intersection is Netflix's The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina…

[Review] "Suspiria" is its own masterpiece separate from the original

10/27/2018

Picture
(By Matt Konopka) It wasn’t too long ago that horror fans received the stunning news that our beloved Suspiria (1977) would be receiving the (inevitable) remake treatment. You can take our Prom Night and our When a Stranger Calls, but you may never take our Suspiria! But they did, and this past weekend saw the limited release of the update. Fans, including myself, have considered the original Suspiria to not only be a great horror film, but a masterpiece. So, did its modern sister live up to the pedigree?...
