For some time, horror has been on the rise. Just this year, films such as The Meg and A Quiet Place have blown the box office wide open. Others, like Hereditary, have challenged the pre-conceptions of the genre, forcing critics who generally view horror as “sleaze” to at least give a nod of respect. Horror is hot. One thing that’s been missing though? Slashers. A favorite sub-genre amongst fans that, for the most part, has disappeared as of late. With any luck, the release of Hell Fest this weekend is about to change that…

[Review] "Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel" is a creepy trek through a house of horror tropes9/27/2018 Ah, Found Footage. The sub-genre that just won’t die. Most fans could probably agree that Found Footage is played out at this point, though every once in a while, filmmakers come along with a new way to tackle it. Just look at Unfriended: Dark Web and its use of the internet. The sequel to the popular Hell House LLC, Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel, is not one of those films… A wise cracking Elvis. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Oh, and vampires. If you aren't currently reading the comic mini-series Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Bloodsuckers, well, I can't change the past mistakes you've been making in life. But maybe I can show you the way back to happiness with this exclusive look at issue #4 of this glorious horror comic... (By Mark Gonzales): When it was released in 1956, The Bad Seed became an instant classic that gathered four Oscar nominations. The film is about a pre-teen girl who kills without remorse or feeling and a parent who does not know how to best protect their dangerous child. Directed by Rob Lowe (St. Elmo's Fire), the 2018 Lifetime film The Bad Seed remake covers much of the same ground as the original while asking the question, "What if the killer's parent was played by Rob Lowe, and, also, what if everybody wanted to do him?"... Back in 1987, horror/action buffs were blessed with one of the most badass films to ever punch us in our drooling faces: Predator. Full of incredible action, creatures, gore, and some of the most memorable one liners of the 80s, the film instantly struck a chord and created a sci-fi horror legacy spanning films, comics, books, and so on. For most fans though, the sequels (I happen to love Predator 2), have left a lot to be desired. The Predator, unfortunately, is no exception… Art in film is not dead. In fact, it may be more alive than ever. Hollywood has filled our theaters with forgettable, big budgeted, flashy films that feel soulless and without substance. They can throw all the money they want at troubled productions, but at the end of the day, you can’t polish a turd. Every once in a while though, a film comes along that revs a chainsaw through the face of the movie world and demands to be noticed as it cuts through Hollywood norms while holding up a middle finger to “safe” thinking studio execs. This past weekend, we were gifted one of those films in Mandy… It feels like only yesterday that A24, the prolific company behind such films as The Witch and Hereditary, announced a surprise new horror comedy, Slice. It practically was yesterday that A24 then shockingly alerted fans that Slice was abruptly dropping on VOD, having released this past Tuesday. Now, after watching, I can see why A24 was so eager to sweep this one under the counter with the rest of the crumbs and roaches… On June 10th, 2016, The Conjuring 2 was released, and audiences all over the world met a character that scared the pants off them, The Nun. While I thought she was a little overhyped, I agreed she was a good character, and so it only made sense when it was announced that The Conjuring universe would be expanding with a new spinoff based on the unholy demon, The Nun. On a budget of 22 million, The Nun released this past weekend and has already grossed over 130 million worldwide. That would be great, if the film was actually any good… |
