[Review] 'Replace' is feminist body horror with plenty of layers to peel back

Replace holds something fearful for everyone. You might hold a similar fear as the main character and hate the idea of aging? Or perhaps you fear the idea of becoming sick or deformed? Or maybe the idea of forced medical experiments creeps you out? No matter what unsettles you, this movie presents quite a few scares or at least some scenes to make you uneasy...

[Beyond Fest Review] '1BR' fills the room with paranoia and dread

9/30/2019

It’s best to go into David Marmor’s 1BR, which played at 2019’s Beyond Fest this past weekend, with as little foreknowledge as possible. I was introduced to 1BR via Beyond Fest’s website in the form of a two-minute YouTube clip. To say I was startled is an understatement. The clip uses horror as misdirection for even further horror and does it all without spoiling a single detail…

[Review] 'Killer Sofa' is more like a La-Z-Boy in more ways than appearance

9/30/2019

I don’t know if director Bernie Rao thought the word ‘sofa’ sounded more menacing or the practical effects for a larger piece of furniture proved too difficult, but this movie is actually about a killer recliner. So, try to suspend any notions of disbelief and set aside any pedantic ideas about furniture. Whenever I find a horror movie from New Zealand, I know I can expect more laughs than scares. Does New Zealand make scary movies or only horror-comedies...

[Review] 'The Special' shows its not always about the size of the budget, but how you use it

The odds are favorable that you've never wondered what it felt like being Brad Pitt in the film Se7en, standing on the roadside shouting, "What's in the box!?" However, on the off-hand chance you have, you're in for about a 74-minute rehearsal. And odds are greater still that you never imagined that a penis might be among said things in the box, but here we are, in 2019, post-“Dick in a Box”, putting our dicks into boxes...

[Review] 'Groupers' experiments with an unfulfilling revenge fantasy

9/26/2019

I could have loved Groupers, the debut feature from writer/director Anderson Cowan. It has everything that I like in a movie, a good hook, good cinematography, and good acting. But the uneven expansion of the main idea and the addition of characters two-thirds of the way through the movie left me wanting something different than what I got...

[Review] 'Bliss' doesn't miss

9/26/2019

Where does inspiration come from and what will people do to keep it? This is the question that lies at the heart of the psychological horror film Bliss. The latest film from writer/director Joe Begos (Almost Human, The Mind's Eye) is a surprisingly deep horror film that takes some tired horror tropes and reshapes them into a supercharged exploration of passion, creativity, and loss of self… all told with plenty of gore and violence...

[Review] 'Haunt' is a house full of frightening tricks and treats

9/24/2019

My first memory of a haunted house is when I was seven or eight years old. It was a small attraction, put on by the local Jaycees’ chapter. I remember watching as the older kids went in, screamed, and then came out on the opposite end, laughing. I remember being scared and wonderstruck at the same time. Looking back, there wasn't anything particularly scary about it (except the fact that the only way I'd go through was with some stranger dressed as Frankenstein), but that moment sparked my obsession with Halloween and haunted houses...

[Review] 'Seeds' is a horrific film, but for all of the wrong reasons

A film that attempts to tackle the monsters inside (and outside) of us, Seeds delivers nothing of substance or purpose...

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live a different life? To be someone else? If you had the chance, would you take it? Would you pay for it? Yedidya Gorsetman’s Empathy, INC. asks us to consider a world in which such things are possible. Where “walk a mile in his shoes” becomes more than just a turn of phrase...

[Review] 'The Baylock Residence' resides in haunting mediocrity

9/20/2019

Imagine yourself in England, during the 1940’s, in the height of World War 2. The chaos, turmoil, destruction, paranoia, and overwhelming sense of helplessness feeding your every twitch and muttered word. Now, imagine all of that, except translated into a Soap Opera-like story, with none of the aforementioned tension, and a touch of Satanic rituals. This, my friends, is The Baylock Residence…
