But when it comes to spiders in horror, fucking burn them because they are the arachnid spawn of the devil! [Review] 'Ready or Not', here comes the bloodiest, most entertaining horror film of the year!8/21/2019 Americans have a fascination with Bigfoot. Especially in the 70s, when there was an unprecedented output of hairy monster movies and novels. He’s our Loch Ness Monster, after all. And just as cryptids are hard to find, so are great Sasquatch movies. Aside from The Legend of Boggy Creek and I guess Harry in Harry and the Hendersons, these films rarely reach the status of “iconic”. The latest, Hoax, likely won’t hit that mark, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good time… Man, families are fucked up, huh? I’m sure all of us, at one time or another, have thought this or that about how our family is “different” from others. What’s scary is, if you grew up with the right (wrong) people, you could have some pretty frightening beliefs. Between the Darkness imagines what would happen if those beliefs turned out to be right… “Is this seriously how you want to live your life?” I’ve been thinking about this opening line from Luz for days now, both in reference to the film, my own life, and the society around me. I mention it because that one line perfectly encapsulates both the confusing, contemplative nature of the film, and its reference to the power of language… Sometimes, I sit around and think about how it blows that just about every video-game film adaptation is complete and utter trash (except for you, my precious Mortal Kombat). While not based on a videogame itself, some adaptations could learn a thing or two from the high-energy, demonic ass-kicking entertainment that is Nekrotronic… |
