Have you ever moved into a new place, spent your first afternoon inside cleaning, organizing, and trashing the previous occupants stuff? Did you feel melancholy going through somebody else's knicknacks and casually discarding their memories? If not, did you at least feel deep dread and discomfort the first time you laid down to sleep in what had been somebody else's bedroom? Creaks, cracks, and cold breezes could be nothing more than the home settling in the night. Or, you could be hearing the angry spirits in the walls. But it's probably the water pipes or something, right?...

It’s hard not to love a movie where Tom Atkins is strutting around throwing out quippy one-liners and Jamie Kennedy plays a surly doctor with a ponytail. At least, it is for me. Happily, there are plenty of other reasons to find enjoyment in Patrick Lussier’s Trick, his third collaboration with writer Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine 3D, Drive Angry). Gore hounds will rejoice at the buckets of blood spilled while fans of the near-mythic slashers of yore should find themselves intrigued by the mysterious Trick, the film’s seemingly supernatural killer who wields mayhem and madness as expertly as his signature hunting knife. I wasn’t sure what to expect from Graham Denman’s Greenlight, but the buzz surrounding its SHRIEKFEST premier was pretty hard to miss. Greenlight, Denman’s feature directorial debut, went on to win SHREIKFEST’s 2019 award for Best Thriller Feature. Having watched the film, it’s easy to understand why... Gwen, written and directed by William McGregor takes place in 1855 and stars Eleanor Worthington Cox as the titular character. It is a tale of a young girl's struggle to keep her family together as her mother's illness, father's absence, and societal pressure create a daunting and horrific reality for her. The most beautiful aspect of this story is Gwen's continual attempt to provide joy and wonder for her younger sister while her world and the world around her comes crashing down. Gwen's ability to always finds moments of true joy with her sibling is incredibly touching... During the late 60s-70s, filmmaking experienced an exploitative trend all throughout the world, a time when just about anything and everything that could be exploited, was. So of course, the male fantasy of hot nuns under all of that clothing that stripped, screwed and slashed became a popular sub-genre. Killer Nun (1979), restored for all to see by Arrow Video, is one of the more well-known nunsploitation flicks of the bunch… [Shriekfest 2019] 'Portal' is a nice return of familiar faces, but leans too heavily on tired tropes10/15/2019 Recently premiering at Shriekfest, Portal follows a group of “ghost hunters” trying to find the perfect haunted house for their TV series. As the film crew arrives on location to film the show “Ghost Seekers”, the team begins questioning the methods of their director because both money and ghosts fail to appear. Steven, played by Ryan Merriman (Final Destination 3) believes in the integrity of his show and refuses to film any fabricated ghosts and instead wants only to record real supernatural encounters. While this approach gives his show a different spin from all the other paranormal investigation and found footage shows, it also makes his TV series a lot more boring... One Night in October describes itself as The Purge meets Creepshow, but this anthology film doesn't live up to either. The three semi-interwoven stories in One Night in October, written and directed by Christopher M. Carter, are fun, but leave the audience wanting more. Each seemingly takes place on the same night in October… It’s that time of year again when myself and many other horror enthusiasts get to relish in the indulgence of Halloween horror cinema. Granted, we celebrate ghosties, ghoulies and things that go bump in the night all year round, but for one month, we’re offered more than our regular dose of horror. While kids are gearing up to fill their pillow cases with candy, we’re filling our streaming queues with horror flicks and sometimes whipping out those old DVDs and Blu Rays. My latest horror outing was Maria Lee Metheringham’s new Halloween genre film, Pumpkins. Although an avid fan of the horror genre, it’s certainly oversaturated. Does Pumpkins have the guts to stand out from the many others?... |
