I know, I know, it's not even December yet, with a lot of films yet to melt our eyeballs this year, but despite that, I'm already thinking actress Toni Collete could win an Academy Award for her role in Hereditary... ...That's because last night, during the Gotham Awards, Toni took home the award for BEST ACTRESS! Yes, that's right, Toni Collete won Best Actress at the Gotham Awards, and it's a win that is well deserved. And it's not like Collete was up against weak competition either. Here are the nominees from last night: Glenn Close - The Wife Kathryn Hahn - Private Life Michelle Pfeiffer - Where is Kyra? Regina Hall - Support the Girls Toni Collette - Hereditary Now I'm not naive. The nominees for the Academy Awards are not until February, the nominees have not been announced yet, and there is no doubt Toni will be facing more major star power once again. We don't even know if Toni herself will be nominated. But the fact is, she should be. Toni's performance in Hereditary is by far the rawest, most personal performance I have seen from an actress this year (with Dakota Johnson in Suspiria as a close second). As we know, anything horror related often gets snubbed at the Academy, but last years wins from Get Out and Shape of Water have me thinking that maybe, just MAYBE, the Academy could finally be coming around to the genre. And if that's the case, Toni Collete winning BEST ACTRESS would be a HUGE win for the genre, and could very well finally cement horror as being a respectable genre at the Academy, one with representation every year. And for genre fans curious about some of Toni's other horror films, check out Krampus, Fright Night (remake), Hitchcock, and of course, The Sixth Sense. By Matt Konopka
