Don Coscarelli thinks there should be a "Bubba Ho-Tep" TV series!

Way back in 2002, we were blessed with a standout Bruce Campbell performance in Don Coscarelli's Bubba Ho-Tep, in which Campbell played a not-dead Elvis battling mummies in a retirement home. Now, it seems Coscarelli is interested in seeing a small-screen version of the one-liner spouting, kicking mummies in the butt, King...

...This past weekend, Beyond Fest in Los Angeles celebrated Coscarelli (Phantasm series) and his new book, True Indie, with a free screening of his 2002 film, Bubba Ho-Tep. In the film, Bruce Campbell plays the REAL Elvis, who has settled into a retirement home years after switching identities with an Elvis impersonator. When fellow old-timers begin getting picked off, Campbell finds himself in a fight with a soul-sucking mummy that's just a tad more decrepit than he is.

The film is based on the short story by prolific horror author Joe R. Lansdale. During a Q&A, Coscarelli answered some questions about Bubba Ho-Tep, which led to this retweet by Lansdale (and thank you to @JaredCowan1 for spilling the news in the first place):

Granted, this is all speculative at this point, but it certainly is an interesting idea. At the moment, there is an ongoing comic miniseries written by Josh Jabcuga which features the alternate reality Elvis, based off another Lansdale story of the same name, entitled Bubba Ho-Tep and the Cosmic Bloodsuckers, in which Elvis is recruited to join the ranks of a rag-tag group of misfits that hunt supernatural evil, in this case, vampires from another dimension. If you haven't read it yet, it's a MUST for over-the-top horror lovers. Lansdale and Jabcuga have proven there is plenty of potential for more Bubba stories. Not to mention, Campbell thrives in TV, and, just as he did with his return to an iconic role in the series Ash vs Evil Dead, he could just as easily recapture our black hearts by returning to play Elvis.

Again, this is all speculation at the moment, but IF a Bubba Ho-Tep TV series was to move forward, I can only imagine the potential with Coscarelli directing and Lansdale and Jabcuga writing. Dream scenario? Yes. But the possibility is there, and who doesn't want to see a badass Elvis curb-stomping evil?
