The Dread Presents label has been on fire this year, with popular films like Terrifier and To Hell and Back having already been released. Now, it looks like the genre label may have another hit on its hands in The Golem...
...Directed by Doron Paz and Yoav Paz (Juruzalem) from a script by Ariel Cohen (Take Mama), The Golem recently played at the La Mano Film Festival in Madrid, Spain and won BEST FEATURE, according to the following tweet sent out by the Epic Pictures Group:
Touted as the first original title in the Dread Presents library, The Golem follows:
A woman's tight-knit Jewish community that is besieged by foreign invaders. Turning to Jewish mysticism, she conjures a dangerous creature to protect her and her people. However, her creation may be more evil than she ever imagined.
Rising from Jewish folklore, the story of the "golem" has been around since at least the 16th century, when a rabbi known as Judah Loew ben Bezalel supposedly created a golem out of clay from the banks of the Vltava River and brought it to life through rituals and Hebrew incantations to defend the Prague ghetto from anti-Semitic attacks.
You won't find me believing such a story, but it is still a rather fascinating narrative, a little reminiscent of Pumpkinhead in film, a creature that is neither good nor evil necessarily, but which has a violent purpose (though Pumpkinhead is arguably much more evil). Check out the fiery trailer below, and keep an eye out for this one in February 2019. By Matt Konopka
