MVD Entertainment Releasing Blu-ray of Rutger Hauer Cult Favorite Creature Feature, 'Split Second'!

One of the lesser seen and badass Rutger Hauer flicks is coming to blu-ray...

...KHC has learned today that the Rutger Hauer-starring cult classic creature feature, Split Second, is finally coming to blu-ray from MVD Entertainment as part of their Rewind Collection! Directed by Tony Maylam (The Burning) and written by Gary Scott Thompson (The Fast and the Furious), the film is a grimy, bloody, and ultimately fun monster movie that sees Rutger Hauer playing your average sick of the world cop facing off against a vicious beast.

In Split Second:

"In a flooded future London, Detective Harley Stone hunts a serial killer who murdered his partner, and has haunted him ever since. He soon discovers what he is hunting might not be human."

The film also stars Kim Cattrall, Alastair Duncan and Michael J. Pollard.

The movie will be presented in 1080p 1.85:1 widescreen, newly scanned, restored and color-graded in 4K from the 35mm internegative, with 2.0 LPCM stereo sound. MVD Entertainment will release the disc on August 11th. Check out the special features below!

This is awesome news—Split Second definitely feels like one of those underrated gems that’s been due for a proper release for a long time. It’s got that gritty, early-90s sci-fi horror vibe that’s hard to replicate, and Rutger Hauer absolutely owns that kind of role.

The flooded London setting alone makes it stand out—it gives the film this bleak, almost dystopian atmosphere that really sticks with you. And the mix of buddy-cop energy with creature horror is such a wild combo, but somehow it works.

Also, that list of special features is seriously stacked. The interviews with the crew—especially the creature effects designer and cinematographer—should be really interesting, especially for fans who appreciate the practical effects era.

Love seeing labels like MVD giving these cult films the treatment they deserve. Definitely one for collectors and anyone who enjoys a good, messy, creature feature throwback.

This is a great pick for a Blu-ray release—Split Second is exactly the kind of film that benefits from being rediscovered like this. It’s gritty, a bit chaotic, and totally unapologetic in what it is, which is probably why it’s stuck with fans over the years.

Rutger Hauer really brings that worn-down, no-nonsense energy to the role, and it fits perfectly with the film’s dark, flooded London setting. There’s something very atmospheric about it that goes beyond just being a typical creature feature.

Also have to say, that’s an impressive lineup of bonus content. It’s always a good sign when a release puts this much effort into giving context and behind-the-scenes insight—it shows real appreciation for the film and its audience.

Nice to see this one getting some proper attention again.
