Late last night, it was revealed during San Diego Comic-Con's event, "Scare Diego", that James Wan's Conjuring universe will be continuing with a third Annabelle film. At first, I wasn't all that excited because frankly, I'm over the Annabelle doll. But then I got to thinking, and realized this film could have a momentous impact on the universe which Wan and New Line have built...
...It was announced during the event that Gary Dauberman will write and direct (having written IT and the previous Annabelle films). Though not much has been said about the plot, James Wan (The Conjuring) revealed that the film will essentially be "A Night at the Museum" but with Annabelle, going further to reveal that the film will finally bring the Annabelle story full circle (after two prequels), with the doll terrorizing the Warren's daughter while in containment in their Museum, where her presence begins to activate the other demonic items contained within.
If you're like me, you're probably thinking "groan, another Annabelle film, when is The Conjuring universe going to do something different?" I was right there with you. So why did I change my tune? Because if New Line is smart, they can use this opportunity to introduce a whole horde of demons and evil relics! Think about it...each Conjuring film has introduced a ghost or two that could have its own film, something we're seeing again later this year with the release of The Nun. With Annabelle activating the other demons in containment with her, there are limitless possibilities as to what kind of fun, scary creatures that this third Annabelle film can introduce!
I've been wondering how The Conjuring universe was going to continue expanding, and I just can't help but think that this will be the answer. Audiences may enjoy Annabelle and The Nun, but we want more. For horror fans, this is OUR universe to get excited about. Other fandoms have their Marvel universe, or their Star Wars universe, and Universal already fucked up their Monster's universe, so I'm hopeful that New Line will seize this chance to present an array of creepy entities destined for their own spinoffs. Frankly, they NEED to, because as of right now, all we have is the Annabelle doll and the entity known only as "The Nun". They can't rely on those two characters forever. Fans need more than that, and I feel confident that we're going to get it with the next Annabelle film, which, in many ways, sounds like it might as well be Conjuring 3 (also a possibility?)
The untitled third Annabelle films hits theaters on July 3rd, 2019.
