Normally, you will NEVER see a a story here about a family Christmas movie releasing straight to Netflix. But when one of the greatest genre stars of our time is appearing in said Christmas movie, I can't help being curious...
...Kurt Russell has long been a fan favorite amongst genre fans since he stormed into the 80s with a trio of John Carpenter films in Escape from New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. Since then, he has gone on to appear in almost 100 projects, including Death Proof, Bone Tomahawk, The Hateful Eight, and most recently, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Quite simply, the man is a legend, notorious for playing a badass . So when I found out that he would be playing Santa Claus in a Netflix film entitled The Christmas Chronicles, I had to check it out.
Directed by Clay Kaytis (The Angry Birds Movie), with a script from Matt Lieberman (The Addams Family remake), The Christmas Chronicles is:
"The story of sister and brother, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about."
Watching the trailer (below), the film looks EXACTLY as cheesy and full of terrible CGI and gag-worthy Christmas themes as you would imagine. That being said though, Kurt Russell appears to be his usual, entertaining self, and if I'm going to watch any Santa Claus movie that isn't Silent Night, Deadly Night, it's going to be the one starring Kurt freaking Russell.
The Christmas Chronicles drops down the chimney November 22nd on Netflix.
