How badly have you wanted to know more of the mythology behind Gremlins and the Mogwai?... ...ComingSoon recently sat down with screenwriter Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia, Last House on the Left), who had been collaborating with original Gremlins scribe Chris Columbus on a third film, and he revealed what he intended (or intends, as the film may still happen), to do with Gremlins 3! During the interview, Ellsworth said: “I became friendly along the way with Zach Galligan, the original Billy Peltzer, and he was so eager to return to the role. He was excited, I guess, by the idea that he and Gizmo should be the equivalent of Han Solo and Chewie in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. And he wasn’t too far off from where we were going. There was, I believe, a smaller role for Billy’s girlfriend, played [in the first two movies] by Phoebe Cates. But Gizmo was at the very core of the story; it explored more of the mythology and the history of the Gremlins.” Ever since Spielberg acquired and collaborated with Joe Dante on transforming Chris Columbus' horror script Gremlins (1984) into a family-friendly Christmas horror romp, fans have been obsessed with the chaotic green creatures. Unfortunately, Gremlins 2 (1990) (despite, as many would argue, being the better film), didn't see the same success, so we've been left waiting for any news on a new film ever since. Gremlins 3 has been an on and off rumor for quite a while, and Ellsworth also states he hasn't touched the script in three years, meaning this version probably won't happen. Despite that , Gremlins 3 is still listed under Ellsworth's IMDB as "announced". Whether or not this means we're still getting the film is unknown, but if we are, we would gladly take a Gremlins film which explores more of the mythology, and explains the whole no food after midnight, but in which damn time zone thing! The moment we know more about a potential Gremlins 3, we'll report it here. By Matt Konopka
