'The Ritual' Director David Bruckner Says He Won't be Holding Back with the 'Hellraiser' Reboot!4/13/2020 ![]()
Jesus wept...
...Last week, we reported that David Bruckner, director behind such films as The Ritual and The Signal, would be rebooting Clive Barker's Hellraiser for Syglass Media. Bruckner received a flood of support from the announcement, and tweeted the following:
Now, this tweet may seem inconsequential, but here's why it matters: Barker's Hellraiser, which follows a woman who must kill for a long lost-lover in order to restore him after he escapes from a hellish realm and torturous beings known as the Cenobites, is legendary for its depiction of pain and torture, and was known as the goriest horror film EVER at the time. And while we wouldn't exactly say the sequels have been tame, the franchise has rarely captured that element of morbid beauty since. You never know what sort of influence the studio will have, and how far Bruckner will be able to go, but when it comes to Hellraiser, fans expect blood. Lots of it. So to see Bruckner promising to deliver on that is a hellish cacophony to fans' ears. Whether or not he'll be able to top the imagery seen in the 1987 cult classic remains to be seen, but we think Bruckner is capable of delivering something truly horrific. Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski are writing the script, which Spyglass Media called "loyal, but evolved".
